The original aim of the blog was to imagine politics even more absurd than current Italian (& US I hasten to add) politics. I am afraid that this is becoming impossible. In particular I admit that I am entirely incapable of imagining anything as absurd as the proceedings of the commissione Telekom Serbia. Instead I am only going to point out the most recent blatant lies coming from the committee Wednesday 8 October 2003.

This claim is obviously false. In particular the president and majority of the the commissione prevented members of the minority from asking Igor Marini any questions in his first appearance as a witness on the 7th of May 2003 (see link above click on 7th of May 2003) . The hearing was closed over the repeated objections of the minority. The final decision was made in secret by the presidenza (which seems to correspond to a conferenza di capigruppi). The hearing was suspended and the presidenza called by authority of the president alone (altro che unanimous).

The presidenza decided (in secret) to send Marini and two members of the commission to Switzerland to pick up documents without bothering to ask the Swiss if this was allowed by the Swiss banking secrecy law. As a result Marini was held in preventive detention in Switzerland so the delay in the opportunity for members of the minority to cross examine him was not brief (and his answers to their questions are not in the transcripts of the proceedings of the commission, since he has been in one prison or another since then and not able to come to Rome. The delay in cross examining Marini is important, since as soon as he was cross examined he contradicted himself. It appears that Marini is not only a liar but a compulsive liar who can not stick to a story.
Also the two representatives were arrested (fermati) and are under investigation for attempting to violate Swiss sovereignty. Again this procedure was clearly not unanimous. One of the indagati suspected of violating Swiss sovereignty Giovanni Kessler repeatedly argued that it would be better to ask the Swiss for the information. It is clear that he was outvoted in the presidenza. I could not imagine anything as grotesque as forcing someone to do something against his will which act leads to his being arrested (fermato) and investigated for a crime. Amazingly the communication of the president of the commission on the next hearing 14 may 2003 did not include any apology to onorevole Kessler. Such an omission is I think sufficient to demonstrate that Enzo Trantino is not a gentiluomo . It appears that Kessler is a gentleman, since he did not complain about the indignity he had endured. Instead Enrico Nan, the other commissioner suspected of attempting to violate Swiss sovereignty asked that the commission ask the Swiss to drop charges, since he was acting on behalf of the commission.

I quote the last lines of Nan’s speach because they make clear that the decision of the commission was not unanimous proving again that senator Consolo is a liar.

Consolo concludes the speach whose substantive claim was a blatant lie contradicted by the public record with the following sentence
“Ritiene, insomma, che la ricerca della verità debba prevalere su tutto, anche sulla passione politica, e per questo auspica che si possa proseguire negli accertamenti per giungere alla verità.”
I think to serve the quest for truth senator Consolo should resign from the committee and indeed from public life. He lied over a matter of minor importance and told a lie so obvious that anyone with a web browser can prove it is a lie. Clearly he doesn’t know what the truth is or, at least, has decided to be an enemy of the truth.
Another member of the majority of the committee attempted to defend the committee. He too resorted to a false claim

I don’t see how Senator Cantoni could possibly claim that no member of the committee ever spoke about tangents. What have they been doing for the past 5 months ?
Senator Eufemi, another, member of the majority of the commission makes a clearly false claim very similar to that made by Senator Cantoni

hmm well I guess Taormina recommended preventive detention for two former prime ministers and the leader of the largest opposition party without emphasis.
Il deputato Italo BOCCHINO (AN) ritiene che sia necessario tornare ad una correttezza dei rapporti e che vadano evitati toni come quelli usati dal collega Kessler, cui ricorda che nessuno all'interno della Commissione ha mai voluto speculare su determinati fatti.

Now it is true that I am reading and quoting the sommario of the hearing of 8 October 2003, since the transcript is not yet published. It is possible that the amazingly obviously false claims made attributed to Consolo, Cantoni, Eufemi and Bocchinoare miss quotations.
Finally I would note that members of the majority of the committee repeatedly advocated a calm tone politeness etc and that the president of the committee closed the debate with a speech which began as follows.
Enzo TRANTINO, presidente, precisa innanzitutto che replicherà solo agli interventi dei commissari attualmente presenti.
All'onorevole Kessler desidera sottolineare che quanto da lui affermato è solo veleno svaporato, odio ideologico e non ricerca della verità.
